History of Penfield Ecumencial Food Shelf
The Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf was the creation of founders Joe Gersitz, Ted O’Brien and Kathy Cummins in April 1997. It began in the First Baptist Church of Penfield at 1862 Penfield Rd.
From the very beginning, the philosophy was adopted to serve all who express a need for help with the only requirement being residency in Penfield.
The Food Shelf started small but quickly became busy accepting donations and serving those in need. Founder Joe Gersitz often spoke of the theme of fulfilling Christ’s words in the Gospel of Matthew, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." Matthew 25:35.
The first vision was to serve families canned goods and other non-perishable items only. But it very quickly changed to include fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and baked goods.
The move to our present location at 1618 Jackson Rd. occurred on Saturday, November 3, 2012. We are pleased to serve about 80 families on a weekly basis.
All PEFS workers are volunteers and we rely on the generous donations from Wegmans, Tops, local churches, civic groups and private donors. Anyone who expresses a need for help will be gladly served.
The Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf has a six person board that helps in decision making in the guidance of our many volunteers.
Board Members (left to right) John Bernhard, Kathy Cummins, Marie Cinti, Fran Cardella, Cathy Wiedemer & George Wiedemer.
